A DIRGE FOR A DEAR ONE
A fervent servant in the Vineyard of the Lord,
Deacon Chris Agoni tended souls
And assuaged the agony of many people
While still having time to tend plants
As his terrestrial calling required of him.
Deacon Christopher Agoni helped to crystallize dreams
A mission he took to his Alma Mater –
St John Boscos College Ubiaja –
Where he taught young hands to nurture seeds
As he, there was taught, decades before.
How then can we say that he is dead:
When those seeds will grow into food
For many known and unknown to feed on;
Many that will grow into men and women
Carrying in them nutrients from the seeds he helped to plant;
Many who, with that strength, will birth other men and women
To the second and the third and unknown generations?
Shame unto you, death!
Your mission has misfired this time.
Agoni is gone but not dead:
Not when the souls that he tended will find their ways to Paradise
Not when the skills that he taught will build the future of children
Not when his memory will live in the hearts of his alumni and family and friends:
This is the solace that we take
As we implore the Lord to grant his soul
Eternal rest in Paradise.
Adieu, Deacon Chris Agoni:
You have played your part and taken a bow
To the applause of angels in heaven
And to the glory of the Lord your Maker.
Peace unto your soul forever!

ABOUT THE DECEASED
Deacon Christopher Odion Agoni attended St John Boscos College (SJBC) Ubiaja, Edo State, from 1974 to 1979 and was the Senior Prefect of the ’79 set. His passion for service, which earned him the post of SP 40 years ago, never left him until his last breath. An Agric specialist, Agoni joined other classmates, notably Chris Iyoha and Ignatius Okoh Selen, also Agric professionals, to reintroduce and reinforce the Young Farmers’ Club at SJBC. He went the extra mile, not only to supply fertilizer and high-yield varieties of crops to the school, but also to coordinate the cultivation and nurturing of the crops until harvest time.
Deacon Agoni who was a committed servant in the Lord’s Vineyard, died on the 11th of April 2019 after he slipped and hit his head in his bathroom.
May his noble soul rest in perfect peace. Amen!
